Chemistry IGCSE Edexcel online classes

Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry (4CH1) has one feature that shapes everything about how it should be taught, and most families only discover it late: there is no practical exam at all.

Cambridge students sit either a laboratory test or a written Alternative to Practical. Edexcel students sit neither. The whole qualification is two written papers, and experimental skills are examined inside those papers — a question will hand your child a method and a table of results and ask them to find the flaw, plot the data, or explain the anomaly. Nothing is assessed by a teacher, nothing needs a school laboratory, and nothing is banked as coursework.

For a Pakistani family that suits two situations especially well. If your child is a private candidate, or at a school whose laboratory provision is thin, 4CH1 removes the problem entirely. And because Edexcel runs both a January and a June series, a student who wants to sit early, retake, or split their subjects across two sittings has options the single-sitting route does not offer.

What the two papers actually ask. Paper 1 is the longer of the two — 110 marks over two hours, carrying 61.1% of the grade — and it draws on the core content of the specification. Paper 2 adds the more demanding material that Edexcel flags in the specification itself, in 70 marks over an hour and a quarter.

What the split does not mean is that Paper 2 is a separate syllabus. Both papers can pull from any of the four content areas — principles of chemistry, inorganic, physical and organic — so a student who has quietly written off a topic because “it came up in Paper 1 already” is exposed. We teach the specification as one body of knowledge and let the papers fall where they fall.

Edexcel also has a distinct examining habit: it likes to place familiar chemistry in an unfamiliar setting. A rates question may arrive dressed as an industrial process your child has never read about; the chemistry underneath is the chemistry they already know. Students who have only memorised worked examples freeze at this. Students who have been made to explain why a rate rises freeze far less, and that is a large part of what our lessons are for.

Where the marks are quietly lost. Three places, in our experience. Calculation questions where the working is right but the answer is given to the wrong number of significant figures or without units. Six-mark extended answers that list facts instead of building an argument. And the practical-analysis questions — the ones testing whether a student can read a method critically rather than perform one. All three are trainable, and none of them are about being clever.
