How we teach Chemistry

One thing to be straight about first, because it affects how you plan: AQA does not publish an IGCSE chemistry specification. What we teach here is AQA’s UK GCSE Chemistry (8462), which is the qualification AQA schools in Pakistan actually enter students for and which IBCC treats as IGCSE-equivalent. If your child’s school says “AQA chemistry”, 8462 is what they mean.

With that settled, the single most important thing about 8462 is the tier.

Foundation or Higher is a ceiling, not a difficulty setting. Both papers are sat at one tier or the other, and the tier decides the grades available before your child writes a word. Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5. Higher tier awards grades 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for a student who narrowly misses. There is no route from a Foundation entry to a grade 6, however well the papers go.

That matters more for Pakistani families than it does in the UK. A student heading for A Level sciences, or for an IBCC equivalence that will sit alongside a medical or engineering application, needs the top of the range open to them. Schools sometimes enter borderline students at Foundation to protect a pass, which is a defensible decision for the school and often the wrong one for the child. It is worth asking your school directly, early, which tier your child is being entered for — and if the answer is Foundation and you disagree, entries can usually still be changed. A good deal of our teaching is aimed at making Higher tier survivable: securing the quantitative chemistry and the extended-response technique that separate a 4 from a 7.

How the content splits. Paper 1 covers topics 1 to 5 — atomic structure and the periodic table, bonding and structure, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes, and energy changes. Paper 2 covers topics 6 to 10 — rates and extent of chemical change, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, chemistry of the atmosphere, and using resources. Each is 100 marks over an hour and three-quarters, and each is worth half the grade.

The even split is deceptive. Quantitative chemistry sits in Paper 1 and is where most marks are dropped across the whole qualification: moles, concentrations, percentage yield, atom economy, and — on Higher tier — titration calculations and gas volumes. It is arithmetic-heavy in a way that catches out strong students who have coasted on recall, and we treat it as a skill to be drilled rather than a topic to be covered.

The required practicals are examined on paper. AQA specifies eight required practicals for GCSE Chemistry, and questions about them are worth at least 15% of the qualification. Your child is never asked to perform an experiment in the exam; they are asked what the method was, why a step was included, what the results showed and what could have gone wrong.

That is genuinely good news for students learning online. It means the marks depend on understanding the eight investigations properly — making salts, titrations, electrolysis, temperature changes, rates, chromatography, water purification and identifying ions — rather than on how well-equipped a laboratory is. We work through each of them, method and reasoning together, using real past-paper questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an AQA IGCSE chemistry syllabus?

Not as such. AQA does not publish an IGCSE chemistry specification — what AQA schools teach at this stage is the UK GCSE Chemistry specification, code 8462, and that is what we teach. IBCC treats it as IGCSE-equivalent. If your child's school says 'AQA chemistry', 8462 is the syllabus they mean.

What is the difference between Foundation and Higher tier?

The tier sets the grades available before the exam is written. Foundation awards grades 1 to 5; Higher awards 4 to 9, with an allowed grade 3 for a near miss. A student entered at Foundation cannot be awarded a 6 however well they perform. If your child is heading for A Level sciences, Higher tier needs to be the target — ask the school early which tier they are being entered for, because entries can usually still be changed.

Do the required practicals need a school laboratory?

Not for the exam. AQA specifies eight required practicals and examines them in writing — your child is asked about the method, the results and the sources of error, never asked to perform an experiment in the exam hall. Those questions are worth at least 15% of the qualification, and we work through all eight investigations in class using past-paper questions.
