How we teach Computer Science

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478) introduces both halves of the subject — the theory of how computers work and the practical craft of writing programs — through a multiple-choice paper and written papers split by Core and Extended depth. We teach it so the concepts and the coding reinforce each other.

From data representation and hardware to networking, databases and the development lifecycle, the syllabus builds a solid technical foundation, while algorithm design and programming fundamentals develop genuine problem-solving skill. We give particular attention to writing and tracing pseudocode and to the security and ethics issues the specification raises.

Sessions are live and small, pitched to each student’s tier, with plenty of practice turning a problem into a working algorithm.

Does my child need to know programming before starting 0478?

No — the syllabus starts from first principles. Half the qualification, Paper 2, is algorithms, programming and logic, answered on paper in pseudocode and flowcharts. We build the logic with hands-on practice, then train students to express it in the exam pseudocode the mark scheme rewards.

Is there coursework or an on-computer exam in IGCSE Computer Science?

Neither. 0478 is assessed by two written papers of 75 marks each — Computer Systems, and Algorithms, Programming and Logic — both 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 50%. Everything is decided in the exam room, which makes disciplined past-paper training unusually effective.

Does IGCSE Computer Science lead into A Level 9618?

Directly — 0478 covers data representation, hardware, networks and algorithmic thinking, which the A Level assumes and deepens. Students who take 0478 seriously find the A Level programming papers far more approachable. We teach both syllabuses, so the approach carries through consistently.
